“You must really love going to the gym”

A statement that I have heard more than once

Written by Jade Sullivan

Well in fact no I don’t.

I’m not saying I hate exercising, but I am human, a real woman living in the real world. I can often think of hundreds of things I could be doing instead of hitting the gym. But I have a goal a dream of being Healthy, smaller in size and toned.

Goals and dreams are always positive but dreaming about it is not going to get me the results I want, therefore I have to put in the work.

Let me give you a bit of a background

To give you a little bit of a background I have trained on and off for years, my weight has fluctuated from a size 8 to a size 14, and I’m no professional in the fitness world. I have yo yoo’d back and forth a number of times getting frustrated and giving up and there’s many factors as to why I have yo yoo’d but that’s for another blog.

Staying consistent and how?

Over the last couple of months I have got back into by training, staying consistent (the majority of the time) and learning more about my Health and Wellbeing to help keep myself Healthy. In order for me to do this I have had to work out what I enjoy and what I don’t.

It's taken me a long time to find what type of exercising I enjoy. I’m not saying I only do these exercises as we all have to do the things we don’t like sometimes, right? But what i have found is by finding something i enjoy I’m more likely to workout and it doesn’t seam like a chore, this also allows me to incorporate aspects of training I don’t enjoy, however get it done as part of my workout.

What do I enjoy?

So what do i enjoy?

Weights I enjoy lifting weight. Now I know this isn’t for everybody, but if we all liked the same thing the world would be a very boring place.  I have been monitoring my progress by using apps to track my workouts where I can see that I’m progressing which helps towards me feeling good about my training sessions.

Now cardio on the other hand is something that I do not enjoy, which is odd coming from a family of runners, guess I wasn’t gifted with that gene, but as my goal is to lose fat and increase muscle I have to incorporate some cardio into my workouts. This is nothing major and often short and sweet. My cardio is as simple as a short incline  walk on the treadmill or I hit the Stairmaster after my weight session, whilst staying in my fat burning zone, after all I’m trying to burn fat as well as build muscle.

My advice

My advice to anyone who has a goal, whether that be changing size, building muscle or working on becoming more fit and healthy, take the time to find what you enjoy. Think about it? if you don’t like a certain food, would you keep eating it? if you don’t like a certain song, would you keep playing it? hoping that this will change you mind. After all the definition of insanity  is doing something over and over again expecting a different outcome.  So why take part in workout that you don’t like, knowing that long term you are going to give up.

So find what you enjoy, whether that be lifting weights, cardio, going to a fitness class, swimming, walking outdoors, yoga, Pilates, the list is endless. Don't give up, search for what you enjoy and you will see how this has a positive impact on your health and wellbeing journey.
